Tokyo Eats & Stays: Eat your way through Japan's 47 prefectures without leaving Shibuya at d47 Shokudo.
Statistics show that for many first-time visitors to Japan, Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka are the main destinations - especially with the Japan Railway ticket price increase. These three cities offer vibrant urban landscapes and rich cultural experiences, but Japan is much more than its famous metropolises - especially when it comes to food. While ramen and sushi might be global favourites, the country’s culinary diversity reflects its regional character. Fortunately, you don’t have to travel across all 47 prefectures to experience Japan’s gastronomic wealth. D47 Shokudo offers a rare opportunity to sample flavours from across the nation - all in one place, right in Shjibuya.
Just as clam chowder is a must-try in Maine, currywurst in Berlin, pizza fritta in Naples, and choucroute in Alsace, Japan’s regions each have their own celebrated specialities. The One Village One Product (一村一品) movement helped popularize local delicacies nationwide, making them a source of regional pride. Today, a trip to for example Fukuoka wouldn’t be complete without a bowl of Hakata ramen, and a visit to for example Niigata’s Uonuma isn’t the same without indulging in hegisoba. However, for those exploring only Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka, experiencing the full spectrum of Japanese cuisine can be a challenge. This is where d47 Shokudo steps in.
Perched on the 8th floor of Shibuya Hikarie, d47 Shokudo is more than your regular restaurant - it's an edible map of Japan's 47 prefectures. Each dish serves as a regional ambassador, carrying the imprint of local traditions and agricultural heritage. The menu preserves distinct cooking techniques and flavour combinations unique to each area. Each month, the restaurant curates a special set meal from a different prefecture, ensuring that each visit offers a fresh dining experience.

Beyond the food, D47 Shokudo boasts an impressive drink menu featuring craft beers, domestic wines, and regional fruit juices. The carefully curated selection allows guests to pair their meal with beverages that complement Japan’s diverse culinary landscape.
The ambiance of d47 Shokudo is just as captivating as its menu, especially in the evening. The open and airy interior is complemented by large windows which frame Shibuya's ever-changing urban canvas. As dusk falls, the cityscape transforms into a constellation of office lights and neon signs. The restaurant offers an elevated perspective of Shibuya's rhythmic street crossings and architectural layers. It’s a fantastic choice if you are looking for a delicious meal with a view of Shibuya.

The restaurant operates in two distinct time slots. Lunch is served from 11:30 AM to 4:00 PM, with the last order at 3:00 PM. In the evening, d47 Shokudo transforms into a relaxed sakaba (tavern) from 6:00 PM to 9:00 PM. Note that the restaurant is closed on Wednesdays, let’s hope you are not a real-estate agent, hairdresser or doctor running a private clinic (these professions often have Wednesdays off in Japan).
For an even deeper dive into Japan’s regional food culture, d47 Shokudo occasionally hosts special events like the “d47 Shokudo Morning,” a breakfast event held on select Saturdays/ Sundays. These events provide a unique opportunity to explore Japan’s morning dining traditions, adding another layer to the restaurant’s appeal

Given the quality and variety of its offerings, d47 Shokudo’s pricing is reasonable. Lunch typically ranges from ¥2,000 to ¥3,000, while dinner costs between ¥3,000 and ¥5,000. I do recommend reservations, especially on weekends and during peak dining hours. I did try to pop by a couple of times with a long queue of people waiting outside.
With its dedication to showcasing Japan’s rich culinary heritage, d47 Shokudo is far more than just a place to eat - it’s an experience. Whether you’re a seasoned traveller or visiting Japan for the first time, a meal here offers a delightful and immersive journey through the country’s diverse food culture. Next time you find yourself in Shibuya, make sure to visit d47 Shokudo and let your taste buds embark on a tour of Japan.
